Parco dell’Adda Sud
The disappearance of pollinators like bees is also due to the decay and scattering of environments fit for their survival. Adda Sud Park wants to do its part to reverse the trend by working on the enrichment of grass, trees, and shrubs focusing on the most appealing species for pollinators.
The Adda River runs through almost all the provinces of Lombardy for more than 300km, following a meandering path. Its wanderings have left visible traces on the territory. In fact, over the centuries, the river has shaped valuable areas for biodiversity in the Lombardy lowland. This heritage is protected and enhanced by Adda Sud Park. It will increase plant diversity to encourage the action of pollinating insects. Without them, there would not be so many fruits on our tables! It also aims to enrich the herbaceous flora along a peri-urban bicycle and pedestrian pathway with species loved by the precious insects. In parallel, it will intervene in a Natura 2000 Site, river banks and wooded areas.
The goal is to contain the expansion of invasive exotic species, collect the many crashes and dead plants due to violent weather events and river flooding. Our project aims to make room for new native trees and shrubs that encourage pollinating insects. Rete di Agricoltura Sociale will place hives with domestic bees, which will be analyzed by Milan State University as bio-indicators for environmental monitoring on air pollutants. Thanks to the new species, Adda Sud Park will become a green gem for the community.
This project is co-funded by the Call for Proposals “Biodiversity and Climate” (BioClima) implemented by Regione Lombardia and supported by Fondazione Cariplo. Bioclima, created under the LIFE MANAGEMENT 2020 project, aims to create public-private financing models to catalyze investment in biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation projects in Lombardy’s forests and protected areas.
